Where Does the Mazda CX-9 Stand Against the Competition?
The Mazda CX-9 and Audi Q7 share a lot of similarities; both are midsize SUVs with three rows of seating and lots of premium luxury to enjoy. Both have exquisitely-crafted designs and powertrains designed for fun and efficiency. However, when it comes to the overall value and comfort that drivers can enjoy for a lower price, the Mazda CX-9 comes out on top. Let us see how our midsize SUV compares to its top Audi competition here at Fitzgerald Mazda of Frederick. You will find us less than a half-hour outside of Germantown, MD.
Mazda CX-9 vs Audi Q7
- Interior: Audi SUVs are often criticized for their cramped interiors and the Q7 is not much of an exception. Its interior passenger volume is unlisted, but its rear and third-row legroom fall considerably short of the Mazda CX-9, as does its front and second-row hip room.
- Cargo: In addition to its cramped interior, the Audi Q7 falls short on cargo volume, with 14.2 cubic feet behind the third-row and 69.6 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. Gaithersburg drivers in need of versatility for a trip down to the Potomac River, should consider the Mazda CX-9 which has 14.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third-row and 71.2 cubic feet in total.
- Performance: While the standard engine of the Audi Q7 generates a bit more horsepower, the Dynamic Pressure Turbocharged engine of the Mazda CX-9 more than makes up for it, generating up to 320 pound-feet of torque, which helps power the available i-ACTIV® AWD. The standard performance of the Audi Q7 generates up to 273 pound-feet of torque.
Price & Warranty
The Mazda CX-9 offers a better performance and more features for a starting price almost a full $20,000 lower than the Audi Q7. Likewise, Hagerstown drivers enjoy more comprehensive engine coverage, thanks to a five-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The standard powertrain warranty from Audi covers the Q7 for four years or 50,000-miles, whichever occurs first.

Fuel Economy
While one might not expect a midsize luxury crossover to offer much fuel economy, the standard turbocharged engine of the CX-9 is designed with energy savings and gas sipping in mind. The Mazda CX-9 travels up to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. While it can reach higher speeds with premium fuel, the CX-9 can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas as well. The Audi Q7, by contrast, travels 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. This SUV also only takes premium unleaded fuel, which costs more in the short-term.

Convenience
Interestingly, while both of these luxury crossover share similar technology features, the Audi Q7 lacks a crucial feature that is standard on the CX-9: automatic cruise control. The Mazda Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) monitors your drive down I-270, automatically applying brakes to prevent tailgating, and gas to resume your speed. A radar cruise control system is available for the Q7 SUV, but absent from the base trim level.
